Do I need my own AI key?
Yes — NovelCanon is bring-your-own-key. You connect a key from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or OpenRouter and pay the provider directly at cost, with no markup from us. Prefer not to pay? Free models are available through OpenRouter. Your key is encrypted at rest and only ever decrypted in memory to make a request.
Which AI models are supported?
The latest frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google — plus hundreds more (including free options) through OpenRouter. Because you bring your own key, you choose the model and can switch any time as new ones ship.
Is my writing used to train AI?
No — we never use your work to train AI. Requests go directly to the provider behind your own key, and the major providers don’t train on API traffic by default. If you reach third-party models through OpenRouter, we explicitly ask those providers not to retain or train on your data.
How does consistency checking actually work?

Can I work offline?
Yes. Keep writing with no connection — your drafts are saved on your device and sync automatically when you’re back online. You can even install it on your desktop or phone like a native app. (AI features still need a connection.)

Yes. Facts are extracted from each scene as you write, so the registry follows your prose, and when you edit a fact away it retires on its own. Nothing joins your story bible until you accept it.

Anything beyond those limits stays readable and exportable — nothing is ever deleted. How do payments and billing work?
Nothing is charged to start — every account begins with the same 14-day Pro trial, no card required, whichever plan you pick. Billing only begins if you choose to subscribe, during the trial or after. Manuscript and Pro subscriptions are then sold and processed securely by Polar, our Merchant of Record — so the charge on your card statement appears via Polar. You can cancel any time from your billing settings, or switch between Manuscript and Pro as your needs change. Model usage from your own AI key is billed separately by your provider, at cost, with no markup from us.
